Saarijärvi Museum offers a rich blend of art and history
The museum organises exhibitions and documents, preserves and researches local
heritage for future generations. Museum activities initiated in the 1950s by the
Saarijärvi-Seura association laid the foundation for the professionally run Saarijärvi City
Museum, established in 1986. Locals and travellers have been able to enjoy temporary
exhibitions for over three decades in the museum’s main building, which was opened
three years later. The main building was renovated and expanded in 2019.
Creativity from nature – Saarijärvi Basic Visual Arts Exhibition
The Saarijärvi Visual Arts Basic Exhibition, which opened in 2023, presents works by
artists from Saarijärvi, covering a period of approximately 100 years. The exhibition
also includes art produced in Saarijärvi or related to Saarijärvi by artists from outside
the city. The exhibition is divided into three sections: portraits and self-portraits,
landscapes, and contemporary art, offering a broad overview of artists, periods, and
artistic movements. The works in the exhibition are drawn from collections managed
by Saarijärvi Museum, including those of the City of Saarijärvi, the Beda, Katri and
Aune Herala Foundation, and the Saarijärvi Mannila Art
Foundation.
The permanent exhibition is open in accordance with the schedule of the museum’s
temporary exhibitions.
