In 2025, the museum’s exhibitions offer a diverse range of visual art, from photography to  THINGS TO DO ACCOMMODATION

Heikki Willamo – In the Arms of the Forest, 15 February – 27 April
Photographic artist, nature photographer and author Heikki Willamo (b. 1952)
is one of the most significant interpreters of and spokespeople for nature of our
time. His exhibition, ”In the Arms of the Forest”, is curated by photographic artists
Marko Hämäläinen and Harri Heinonen. The museum is performing environmen-
tal education connected with the exhibition, particularly for schoolchildren.

Always on a Journey – The Paintings of Leena Luostarinen, 14 May – 31 August.
Visual artist Leena Luostarinen (1949–2013) significantly influenced later genera-
tions of artists through her art and teaching work. The exhibition at the Saarijärvi
Museum, curated by Metropoliitta Arseni, presents the artist’s output from the
1980s and 1990s kept in private collections.

Guardians of the Heritage of Art – Saarijärvi Mannila Art Foundation and the                DINING
Beda, Katri and Aune Herala Foundation’s collections and activities over a 40-

The exhibition, which celebrates the 40th anniversary of the foundations and is             SERVICES
based on the collections managed by the Saarijärvi Museum, presents a wide
range of paintings, sculptures and graphics from the art foundations’ collections,
and presents the decades-long history of the art foundations featured.

Born in Rovaniemi in 1956, Markku Hirvelä graduated as a sculptor from the Fine
Arts Academy of Finland in 1984. A common theme in the works of the sculptor,
who has held numerous exhibitions at home and abroad and won prizes in art
competitions, is the low-lying light of the north, which stems from the memories of
a childhood spent at the Arctic Circle.
The museum exhibits and events are supported by the Friends of the Saarijärvi
Museum Association.
