Saarijärvi Museum is chock-full of adventures in art and history
The museum arranges exhibits and documents, preserves, and researches local
knowledge for future generations. The museum efforts initiated in the 1950s by
the Saarijärvi-Seura association built the basis for the professional Saarijärvi City
Museum established in 1986. Locals and travellers have been able to enjoy
temporary exhibits for over three decades in the museum’s main building, which
was opened three years later. The main building was renovated and expanded
in 2019.
Creativity from nature – Saarijärvi Basic Visual Arts Exhibition
The new Saarijärvi Visual Arts Basic Exhibition presents art by Saarijärvi’s resident
and native-born artists, covering a period of about 100 years. The exhibition in-
cludes art produced in Saarijärvi or related to Saarijärvi by artists from outside the
city as well. The exhibition is divided into three parts: portraits / self-portraits, lands-
capes, and contemporary art, with the aim of presenting a broad range of artists,
periods and artistic movements. The exhibition works are from the collections of
the City of Saarijärvi as well as from Beda, Katri, the Aune Herala Foundation, and
the Saarijärvi Mannila Art Foundation.
The main exhibition is open to the public in accordance with the opening hours
of the temporary exhibitions.
