Teuvo Tuomivaara
Loikka / Leap

The starting point of the Leap artwork was formed by the arc theme simplifying a reindeer
and northern light. After several sketches and simplifications, Tuomivaara ended up with two
opposing arches. The actual reindeer figure is made of wood and its opposing arch – antlers and/
or sun – of steel. The wooden part has been carved from a large dead pine and tarred twice. The
steel arches have been bent in a workshop in Oulu. Spikes of different lengths have been welded
to the arches. They represent antlers and/or sunbeams. Tuomivaara’s objective was to simplify
the reindeer figure to its extreme, to join northern light into the same form.

Sculptor and artist Teuvo Tuomivaara was born in Posio in 1943, where he continues to live today. He
has studied sculpture under professor Terho Sakki 1973–1979 and in the Adult Education Centre of
the City of Helsinki 1968–1971. Tuomivaara has worked over the years as a sculpture teacher in many
institutions and sculpture courses. Tuomivaara’s artworks can be found in many public collections in
Finland as well as abroad, and he has held several own exhibitions and he has participated in many
collective exhibitions. Tuomivaara has received several honours and awards.
